About Cranial Prosthetics
What is a cranial prosthesis?
A cranial prosthesis is a medical-grade wig specifically prescribed and fitted for individuals experiencing hair loss due to a medical condition such as cancer treatment, alopecia, or other diagnoses. Unlike fashion wigs, cranial prostheses are designed for comfort, security, and a natural appearance on sensitive scalps.
How is a cranial prosthesis different from a regular wig?
Cranial prostheses are made with medical-grade materials, custom-fitted to your head, and designed to be worn comfortably for extended periods. They are also eligible for insurance coverage when prescribed by a physician, unlike fashion wigs.
Do I need a prescription for a cranial prosthesis?
Yes. To qualify for insurance coverage, you will need a written prescription or letter of medical necessity from your physician or oncologist. We can guide you on what information your doctor needs to include.
What hair types and textures do you offer?
We proudly serve clients of all backgrounds and hair types. Our collection includes straight, wavy, curly, coily, and kinky textures in a wide range of lengths and colors. We are committed to celebrating diversity and ensuring every client finds a perfect match.
Insurance & Coverage
Does my insurance cover a cranial prosthesis?
Many insurance plans — including Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurers — cover cranial prostheses when medically necessary. Coverage varies by plan. We recommend contacting your insurance provider and visiting our Insurance & Coverage page for detailed guidance.
What billing codes are used for cranial prosthetics?
The most commonly used code is HCPCS code A9282 (wig, any type). We provide itemized receipts with appropriate codes to support your insurance claim.
Can I use my FSA or HSA to pay?
Yes! Cranial prosthetics prescribed for a medical condition are generally FSA/HSA-eligible. We accept FSA and HSA cards as payment.
What if my insurance denies my claim?
Insurance denials can often be appealed. We can provide additional documentation to support your appeal. We recommend working closely with your insurance provider and healthcare team throughout the process.
Consultations & Process
What happens during a consultation?
During your private, one-on-one consultation, one of our specialists will discuss your hair loss journey, assess your scalp, review your lifestyle and preferences, and help you explore the best options for your needs. Consultations are conducted in a compassionate, judgment-free environment.
How long does it take to receive a custom cranial prosthesis?
Timelines vary depending on the type of prosthesis and customization required. Standard pieces may be available immediately, while fully custom pieces can take 2–6 weeks. We will give you a clear timeline during your consultation.
Is my health information kept confidential?
Absolutely. We treat all health-related information with strict confidentiality. Your privacy is our priority. Please review our Privacy Policy for full details.
Care & Maintenance
How do I care for my cranial prosthesis or medical wig?
Proper care extends the life of your piece. General guidelines include:
- Wash with sulfate-free, wig-safe shampoo and conditioner
- Gently detangle with a wide-tooth comb or wig brush
- Air dry on a wig stand when possible
- Avoid excessive heat unless the piece is heat-safe
- Store on a wig stand away from direct sunlight
We provide personalized care instructions with every purchase and offer professional maintenance services.
How often should I have my wig professionally serviced?
We recommend professional cleaning and styling every 4–6 weeks for daily wearers, or as needed. Regular maintenance keeps your piece looking its best and extends its lifespan.
